Healthy In Houston: Paleo Friendly Restaurant Round Up

While I don’t necessarily prescribe to any particular “diet,” if I was held at gunpoint and asked to define my style of eating, my response would be something like “Paleo most of the time.”

More accurately, my response would be more along the lines of, “wait, WTF is going on? Is that really what you want? You don’t want my purse? This watch is from Target. Uhh… Paleo most of the time?”

(I think that scenario is a dietitian-only nightmare.)

Anyway. Yeah, I just jive eating this way. I find that I do really well in terms of any weight, hunger, skin, pain, and sleep issues when I make a concerted effort to stick to the basics– meat, veg, fruit, nuts, and seeds.

Honestly, concerted effort is probably an overstatement. Once you get into the swing of things, I don’t think eating Paleo (at least in my admittedly loose interpretation) takes that much effort. It exists on a spectrum, and for those on the less stringent end of said spectrum, it’s a lifestyle that easily lends itself to delicious and nourishing food, both at home and at restaurants.

For that reason, this list offers a limited view of the restaurant options for anyone eating Paleo. Almost any restaurant can be considered Paleo-friendly, so long as they’re willing to make some customizations so that you end up with a plate that’s full of mostly veggies and some meat.

Of course, those on the stricter end of the Paleo spectrum will want more assurance regarding the oils, spices, etc. used in the preparation of their meals, which can often be difficult to confidently obtain at your run of the mill restaurant. This list is probably not optimal for that population, but if you’re a little loosey goosey like me, enjoy. And feel free to leave me a comment telling me about anything I overlooked!

uniquely Houston

1. Corner Table: A no brainer addition to this list, Corner Table designates about half of their brunch, lunch, and dinner menus as Paleo.

2. Ruggles Black:  A relatively new spot that similarly denotes which menu items are Paleo. I’m eyeing the Paleo Beef Short Rib Tacos and Paleo Tandoori Zataar Chicken for my first visit.

3. Cafe TH: Opt to get your Vietnamese favorites served over stir-fried veggies or spaghetti squash. Go for one of the three Washington Gym-approved options for a Paleo no-brainer.

4. Sammy’s Wild Game Grill: These patty options are not for the faint of heart– water buffalo, venison, elk, antelope, and kangaroo. Of course there’s an angus beef option for those who aren’t feeling quite as adventurous. Go bunless and top with avocado, fried egg, bacon, and/or grilled mushrooms for a meal that’s perfectly primal.

5. Bare Bowls Kitchen: Globally-inspired meat, veggie, and grain bowls. Swap the grain for more veggies and you’re good to go.

6. Clean Sweets: Specifically designated Paleo baked goods are made with coconut oil, avocado oil, coconut and nut flours. Order your sweets directly from their site or find them at select coffee shops (Boomtown and Southside Espresso are both favorites of mine).

in Houston & elsewhere too

1. Snap Kitchen: As you probably already know, I work for Snap, but I was a customer long before my employment. I now happily eat at least 15 meals a week here, with the Paleo/Paleo Style dishes being some of my favorites. I love the Chicken Sausage Breakfast Tacos, Chicken & Green Chile “Enchiladas,” Over Easy Bison Burger, and the Moroccan Chicken Bowl. Yum.

2. Verts Kebap: Take the salad route and enjoy tons of veggies topped with roasted chicken, or beef & lamb. Nutrition information is available online, which I always nerd out about.

3. Elevation Burger: A fast food burger you can feel good about. I get the grass-fed patty wrapped in lettuce and topped with caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms.

4. Chipotle: Duh.
